Many May Festivals in Maryland

There’s a good chance you'll find a Maryland festival in May that's right up your alley.

For starters, there are at least three spring festivals in the early part of May. Hurry to Leonardtown for the Southern Maryland Spring Festival from April 29 to May 2. Then there is the Towsontown Spring Festival in Towson on the first weekend in May and Springfest from May 6 to 9 celebrates spring and the upcoming summer season at the south end of Ocean City’s famous Boardwalk

There are folk dance performances, live music for dancing, vendors and raffles at German-American Festival on May 2 in Jessup.

There are two top fine arts festivals. Visit National Harbor along the Potomac River for the Washington International Arts Festival on May 1 and 2 – and Downtown Bethesda for the Bethesda Fine Arts Festival May 8 and 9.

For all that jazz, on May 8 the Eastern Shore town of Berlin – 15 minutes from Ocean City – becomes an outdoor blues and jazz lounge with the Berlin Blues & Jazz Bash. Also on May 8, enjoy smooth jazz amid two blocks of plant and shrub displays, craft exhibitors and food vendors at Carroll County's Westminster Flower and Jazz Festival.

Dust off your kilt and take the family to a celebration of Scottish culture at the Frederick Celtic Festival on May 8 at the Frederick Fairgrounds. A week later, May 15, the Scottish Games take place at Fairhill Racetrack and Fairgrounds.

For epicurean delights try the Calvert Wine and Arts Fest on May 8 in Sunderland. Wine in the Woods runs May 15-16 in Columbia and Wine in the Garden on May 27 at the Howard County Conservancy in Woodstock.

Kent Island Day May 15 at Stevensville commemorates the founding of Kent Island in 1631 and you can meet the Faeries at the Maryland Faerie Festival, May 15 and 16 in Upper Marlboro.

On the last day of May there is the now famous Ridgely Lions Club strawberry shortcake and ice cream – among much else – at the Ridgely Strawberry Festival in Sutton Park, Ridgely.

Medora Musical in North Dakota Badlands

Every year, from June to September, the Burning Hills in the North Dakota Badlands resound with music and laughter.

Billed as the "Greatest Show in the West", the Medora Musical is held in the outdoor splendor of the Burning Hills Amphitheatre a mile west of Medora. The all new Medora Musical will be performed nightly from June 2 through September 5, 2010, at 8:30 p.m. Kids are invited on stage to join in the fun at every performance.

This western musical variety show is great family entertainment, full of high-energy song and dance routines, yodeling and clog dancing, and a star-spangled, patriotic finale. A portion of the show is dedicated to 26th US President, Theodore Roosevelt.

The 70,000-acre Theodore Roosevelt National Park and its rugged topography on the Little Missouri River 35 miles north of Medora honor Roosevelt, who ranched in the Badlands and later established the national park system. He came to the Badlands in 1883 to hunt and established the Maltese Cross and Elkhorn open-range cattle ranches. The park is home to Roosevelt’s cabin and marks the original Elkhorn ranch site.

The romantic history of the Wild West lives on in historic Medora and the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame there showcases the history of Native Americans, ranching, rodeo, and the western lifestyle of the plains and Badlands.

The 19th annual New Orleans Wine & Food Experience (NOWFE) kicks off summer with its five-day extravaganza May 25–29, 2010. Long sultry days are welcomed with an abundance of fresh Louisiana seafood at the 3rd annual Louisiana Seafood Festival June 11–13, 2010. And the 8th anniversary event of Tales of the Cocktail is sure to raise the spirits of any summer-loving, food and spirit connoisseur July 21–25, 2010.

The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience is nationally recognized as one of the most prestigious festivals of its kind and features over 175 wineries, 1000 wines, dozens of international wine and food experts, and now continually raises over $125,000 annually for local charities.

The event is packed with extraordinary wine and food seminars, wine dinners at some of the cities most celebrated restaurants, one-of-a-kind wine tasting events, and two Grand Tastings on the floor of the famed Louisiana Superdome. Multiple Mark Twain anniversaries in New York’s Finger Lakes

Over 50 special events in New York’s Finger Lakes will honor American author Mark Twain’s enduring legacy on the 175th and 100th anniversaries of his birth and death respectively. It is also the 125th anniversary of the release of his renowned novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Twain spent a significant number of happy and productive years in the Finger Lakes region, spending summers in Elmira, a quiet city in the Finger Lakes, for over 20 years. His home there was a respite from the stresses of everyday life. Cynthia Raj, Manager of Tourism Promotion for Chemung County, explained, “Elmira was where Twain married, summered with his in-laws, buried his beloved wife and three children who preceded him in death, and chose as his final resting place.”

Twain also wrote a great deal of his beloved literature in the Finger Lakes. “He drew inspiration from the spectacular views of the Chemung River Valley to pen such classics as Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from his tiny study perched in the hills,” said Raj.

A large number of events will celebrate Twain’s life and literature. On April 21, the anniversary of his death, actor Hal Holbrook will perform his Emmy and Tony award-winning show Mark Twain Tonight! at the Clemens Center. On April 21-23 Hill Top Inn will be holding “Dine Like Twain Dinners,” where visitors can enjoy Twain family recipes while looking out over the same river view Twain himself gazed at while writing. To complete the experience, there will be a re-enactment of Twain’s burial at Woodlawn Cemetery on April 24.

Several ongoing promotions and specials will also honor Twain, among them the “Mark Twain in Elmira” exhibit at Chemung County Historical Museum which opens on April 15.

Rovin’ with Rover on Oregon’s People’s Coast

The dog days of summer are still months away, but April is Four-Legged Friends month on The People’s Coast, Oregon.

It would be a doggone shame to miss the fetching opportunities just begging to be explored this month (and in May) on The People’s Coast. There’s the Doggie Olympics and a costume parade, special pet-friendly rates and always lots of really cool things to smell! So don’t be a heel. Collar your whole family, go for a visit – and stay! You’ll have a ball! But before you do, pause for a moment to read the regulations regarding leash requirements in Oregon’s state parks. Okay? Good boy!

Think you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Then check out the Mutt Masters Dog Show and Olympics in Lincoln City on May 15. Strut your stuff at the Doggie Costume Parade and then enjoy a free pontoon boat ride during Doggie Weekend at Loon Lake Resort in Reedsport. Lap up the sites and suds at Brewer’s Memorial Ale Festival, “the world’s largest dog-friendly beer festival,” in Newport. Or simply enjoy a nice old-fashioned jog with Rover on Cannon Beach.

When it’s time to stay, you won’t have a rough time finding a pet-friendly deal. The Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City is offering a “doggie discount” package that includes treats, chew toys, a Frisbee and a stylish bandana. The Land’s End Motel in Cannon Beach is waiving pet fees during April. Daisy can snuggle into her very own bed and enjoy a lovely biscuit for no extra fee this month at The Best Western Pier Point Inn in Florence. And chew on this: Donating a can of food will fetch you a 20 percent discount at Fireside Motel in Yachats.
