Country Joins Rock ‘n Roll at Classic Car Event

The entertainment headliners for 2014 Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada is a lineup that is sure to keep the crowds on their feet during the weeklong annual celebration of America’s love affair with cars and rock ‘n’ roll.

Performances will kick off Tuesday, July 29 and go until Saturday, August 2. And what’s a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll without a little bit of country? On Friday, August 1 for the first time ever Hot August Nights introduces Country Night, starring Darryl Worely.

“We are very excited to wrestle into our wranglers and slip on our cowboy boots,” said Tony Marini, Executive Director of Hot August Nights. “It will be a night to remember and a little something different for Hot August Nights with all that join in on the festivities, but not to worry we haven’t lost that lovin’ feeling as The Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley takes the stage on Saturday night at Grand Sierra.”

Darryl Worely is known as a genuinely traditional country artist from Nashville who doesn’t follow trends or fads, but rather his own bedrock convictions. With twenty hit singles, including three number one songs: "I Miss My Friend", "Have You Forgotten", and "Awful, Beautiful Life" this is one show crowds will kick their heels up for. Five lucky winners will also receive a Darryl Worely Prize Package with details to be announced shortly.

Along with a Country Night, to keep the tradition alive, memorable rock ‘n’ roll acts from the 50’s, 60's, and 70's, with some of the top tribute acts in the country will be featured ranging from: Chicago Tribute Authority, Nathan Owen Motown Legends, and “Somethin’ tells me I’m into something good” Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, with more acts listed below. All performances are scheduled to begin at 8:15pm.t

Hot August Nights, a non-profit organization, is the premiere classic car event in the world, annually drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators and participants to northern Nevada to revel in nostalgia, enjoy top entertainers from the 50s, 60s and 70s and participate in a variety of events including Show-n-Shines, controlled cruises and more.

Waikiki Beach Sports Festival Honors Duke’s Legacy

Duke’s OceanFest, Waikiki’s premier ocean sports festival and a popular celebration in tribute to Duke Kahanamoku for watermen and waterwomen worldwide, is being showcased this summer over a nine-day period from August 16 to 24.

Now in its 13th year, Duke’s OceanFest will feature a variety of competitions and events that includes surfing, stand-up paddling, one-mile ocean swim, lifeguard competition, surfboard waterpolo, wounded warrior canoe regatta, paddle boarding, beach volleyball, and beachfront luau.

Most competitions will take place near Queen’s Surf in Waikiki, with the surf stand and exhibit booths fronting the majestic statue of Kahanamoku.

Brent Imonen, Event Director for Duke’s OceanFest, said: “We’re putting together an exciting schedule of ocean sports competitions and special events, and urge our waterman community and Hawaii’s visitors to mark their calendar and be part of the celebration. Duke’s OceanFest is the best time of year to experience Waikiki Beach and see the ocean sports heritage that has made it such an iconic destination.”

Kahanamoku’s enduring legacy and all he represents to Hawaii and the waterman spirit continues to be the primary inspiration for Duke’s OceanFest, with this year’s events concluding on Sunday, August 24, the 124th anniversary of his birth.

Revered as Hawaii’s greatest athlete, Kahanamoku (1890-1968) won six Olympic medals, including three gold medals in swimming, from 1912 to 1932, and is recognized as the “Father of International Surfing.” Kahanamoku was the world’s fastest swimmer, a champion paddler and steersman, and a lifelong mentor to generations of watermen and waterwomen. He once used his surfboard to rescue eight people from drowning following a boating accident in California. Kahanamoku was the first person inducted into both the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1965) and International Surfing Hall of Fame (1966).

Duke’s OceanFest supports the mission of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF), the public, nonprofit foundation established in Kahanamoku’s honor in 1986.

Celebrating Culture and Heritage of Southeastern Indians

The Moundville Native American Festival celebrates the culture and heritage of Southeastern Indians. It is held in early October at the University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park in West Central Alabama.

One goal of the festival is to dispel Native American stereotypes by sparking an understanding of what once was and now is Southeastern Indian culture.

Festival organizers engage over 100 Native Americans and other experts to demonstrate arts, crafts, technologies and other lifeways and to perform music, dancing and storytelling particular to the southern tribes.

The Moundville Native American Festival began in 1989, and 2014 marks its 25th anniversary. The festival has four major educational areas: the Arts and Craft Arbors, the Living History Camp, the Children's Area and the Native American Stage. Other components include a Trader's Circle and Arts Market, a Target Range and a food court. Every area reflects aspects of Southeastern Indian culture from various perspectives.

Additionally, guides are stationed at the park’s museum and at strategic points throughout the site to interpret this pristine prehistoric landscape.

Many Native Americans attending the festival, especially those whose families were forcibly removed from the Southeast, consider the park to be a sacred site and the festival a homecoming.

The Moundville Native American Festival has grown into one of the largest events of its kind in the Southeast. Designated a Cultural Olympiad Event by the 1996 Olympic Games, the festival has also received awards from the National Bus Association, the Alabama Tourism Department, the Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the West Alabama Tourism Awards. It is consistently listed as one of Alabama's top 20 tourism events.

Moundville Archaeological Park is 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa on Alabama Highway 69, off of I-20/59, Exit 71-A. For more information, call 205-371-2234 or visit http://moundville.ua.edu.

Cheese Days in Monroe Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Welcome to Green County Wisconsin and the granddaddy of all food fests in the Midwest – Green County Cheese Days in Monroe.

September 19 to 21 marks the 100th anniversary of Green County Cheese Days, and the cheesemaking, dairy farming, and Swiss traditions that continue to this day.

Right away you’ll sense the cheesy vibe:  old time copper kettle cheesemaking demonstrations, cheese carving, cheese pairings, and cheese sampling .

On the menu: gourmet grilled cheese, the best deep-fried cheese curds in the nation, cheesecake on a stick.  New in 2014:  “Procession of Cheesemakers” with a cheesemaker from each of the dozen factories donning the traditional white uniform and bearing their signature cheese as part of the pomp and circumstance of the opening ceremony.

The best and brightest of the area’s bovines (Brown Swiss, Jersey, Guernsey, Holstein, Red & White Holstein, Ayrshire, and Milking Shorthorn) are selected to make the trip to the “big city” to play starring roles in the wildly popular Cow Milking Contest.  For many, the highlight of the weekend is The Swiss Colony Cheese Days Parade, led by a herd of Brown Swiss cows sporting clanging bells and floral wreaths.

To mark this special anniversary, 100 accordion players will play the official Cheese Days song (of course there is a song), and visitors can tour two century farms where multiple generations have tilled the land and milked the cows for more than 100 years.
Cheese Days offers up more fun things to do than there are holes in a giant wheel of Swiss cheese.  Like the song says “Come to Cheese Days in Monroe!”

Savor the Difference in This Cajun Location

Iberia Parish, Louisiana celebrates its rich heritage and just about everything else at its many area festivals and events, from Mardi Gras to Louisiana shrimp, sugar and music.

Among them are the Delcambre Shrimp Festival (August),  Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival (September) and World Championship Gumbo Cookoff (October).

The town of Delcambre, Louisiana, located about 20 miles southwest of Lafayette, is home to one of the area's most productive shrimp fleets and on August 14 to 18 the town will devote an entire weekend to honor this economic lifeblood with the Delcambre Shrimp Festival. Events include a shrimp cook-off, queens’ pageants, fais-do-do's, food booths, carnival rides, and the blessing of the shrimp boat fleet. There's plenty of fun for "kids" of all ages and lots to see, hear, and eat.

For 73 years the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival has brought together 23 sugar-producing parishes to honor the cane growers, mill operators and others in the sugar industry with ceremonies, parties, parades, royalty, exhibits, and dancing in the streets. Set in historic New Iberia, the event (September 24-28 in 2014) has small town charm and features top-notch entertainment.

Each year, on the second weekend of October, the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce hosts the World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off, a premier event in Iberia Parish. The three-day event (October 10-12 this year) takes place on New Iberia's historic and award-winning Main Street.

While the gumbo competition itself is on Sunday, Friday evening kicks off the event weekend with great music and popular food items. On Saturday, there are bands all day, down town shopping deals, museum tours and forty-plus food booths cooking anything but gumbo for lunch. Sunday's full attention goes to the gumbo as 90 or more teams vy for bragging rights to the best gumbo in the world.

Just 20 miles south of Lafayette, 2 hours west of New Orleans and 4 hours east of Houston, New Iberia is a must for visiting. Click here for directions. For information on many other events in this Cajun location visit www.iberiatravel.com
